What to Expect Prior to Surgery: Pre-Surgical Screening
Any labs, EKGs, or X-rays required for your surgery will be arranged by your surgeon and must be completed prior to your scheduled surgery date. A UPSC staff member will call you prior to your surgery to review your health history (medications, allergies, etc), explain the procedures of the surgery center, and address any questions you may have.
If you have not heard from UPSC two days prior to your scheduled date of surgery, please call us at (918) 742-2303 between 7 am and 2:30 pm, Monday – Friday.
The following instructions are very important, and must be followed or your surgery may be rescheduled. If you feel that you may be unable to comply with these guidelines or if you are experiencing any of the following before surgery: illness, rash, cough, fever, pregnancy, or open sores/wounds of the skin, please contact UPSC at (918) 742-2303 between 7:00 am and 2:30 pm, Monday – Friday.
- Do NOT eat or drink anything after midnight, unless instructed to do so; this also includes smoking and chewing tobacco, gum or mints.
- Do NOT drink alcoholic beverages or take recreational drugs 48 hours prior to surgery.
- Do NOT take aspirin/aspirin-like products or herbal supplements for 7 days prior to surgery. If you have been prescribed aspirin or other blood-thinning medications, you must call the prescribing physician office and obtain a release to hold these medications as well as a re-start date from your prescribing physician.
- Take heart, blood pressure, lung, seizure, and acid reflux medicines with a sip of water the morning of your surgery.
- If you use an inhaler, please bring it with you.
- If you are a diabetic, do NOT take your insulin/pills the morning of surgery. Please bring your insulin with you.
Your Role in Preventing Infection
- Please shower the night before and the morning of surgery using an antibacterial soap. Do not use lotion, powder, hairspray, makeup or any other products the morning of surgery.
- Clean and change sheets on bed.
- Do not shave surgical site area within 24 hours of surgery.
Day of Surgery Checklist
A responsible adult (at least 18 years of age) will need remain in the facility the day of your surgery and drive you home. Someone will also need to remain with you for the first 24 hours after your procedure.
Failure to have family or a caregiver in attendance before surgery may result in the rescheduling of your surgery.
- Leave your valuables, including jewelry and cell phones at home. All body piercings must be removed.
- Use of cell phones in clinical areas for video, audio recording or pictures is strictly prohibited.
- Bring your insurance card and picture ID.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing (over-sized front button shirt for any arm / shoulder surgery).
- Do not wear contact lenses.
- If your child is scheduled for surgery, bring a favorite toy for extra comfort.
- Bring a written list of all medications and the dosage.
After surgery, you will be taken to the recovery room or post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) where you will remain under close observation by the PACU staff until you are ready to go home. In PACU, the nurse will monitor your blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate frequently, as well as medicate you for pain and/or nausea. If you have excessive nausea or pain, you may require more time in recovery. Discharge instructions specific to your procedure will be sent home with you and verbally reviewed with your family member and/or caregiver prior to your departure.
Once all discharge criteria are met, you will be discharged to home to continue your recovery. It is important to note that nausea and dizziness may be symptoms of anesthesia and pain after surgery is expected and can only be made tolerable, not relieved 100%.

The invoice that you receive from UPSC is the facility fee for the use of the facility, supplies, implants, routine drugs, and nursing personnel. You will receive a separate invoice from your surgeon, the anesthesiologist, and for any other professional services you may receive such as radiology, pathology, or assistant surgeon.
During the course of your procedure, there may be products that your surgeon has chosen to use that will not be included in your invoice from UPSC. These items are durable medical equipment (DME) and will be invoiced to your insurance carrier by the vendor providing the product at UPSC.
Patients with insurance are asked to pay their copayment and any deductible as a deposit on the day of surgery. The business office will notify you if you are required to bring payment the day of surgery. UPSC will bill your insurance carrier as a courtesy; however, any balance due is the patient’s responsibility.
If you do not have insurance or are having cosmetic surgery, you must pay any charges due on or before the day of surgery. If you have any questions regarding fees or insurance, please call our business office at (918) 742-2502. UPSC accepts VISA, Discover, MasterCard, cashier’s check, money orders, cash, and personal checks. Note, personal checks are not accepted on self pay or cosmetic surgery procedures.
As a patient, you have a right to:
- Medical and nursing services without discrimination based upon age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, handicap, disability, or source of payment for care.
- Respectful, quality care and high professional standards given by competent personnel.
- Receive as much information about any proposed treatment/procedure needed in order to give informed consent or to refuse this course of treatment. Information will include significant risks, alternative course of treatment, and knowledge of the name(s) of person(s) performing the treatment procedure.
- Participate actively in decisions regarding care to the extent of the law. This includes the right to refuse treatment. Every patient has the right to be advised if the facility or physician proposes to engage in any experimental or investigational treatments or procedures. Every patient has the right to refuse to participate in experimental or investigational treatments or care.
- Full consideration of privacy concerning medical care. The patient has the right to be advised as to the reason for the presence of any individual. Case discussions, consultations, examinations, and treatments are treated in a confidential manner.
- Confidential treatment of all communications and records pertaining to care to the extent required by all applicable federal and state laws and regulations. Written permission will be obtained before medical records can be made available to anyone not directly concerned with the care.
- Access information contained in the patient’s clinical record following applicable procedures.
- Have pain treated and managed effectively.
- As a minor, have care coordinated by minor’s parent and/or legal guardian(s) unless minor is authorized by law to consent to such treatment.
- Examine and receive an explanation of the invoice, regardless of source of payment.
- Voice grievances if treatment or care fails to be furnished and to have those grievances addressed in a timely fashion.
- Advance Directives; however, UPSC does not honor Advance Directives. Advance Directives will be reinstated at time of discharge.
